Happy Thanksgiving!

The holiday season is here again! Beginning with Thanksgiving, then Hanukkah, Christmas and the celebration of the New Year coming five weeks later, this is a special time when we welcome new family members and friends to share in our traditions, and also a time to remember loved ones who have passed.  Our forefathers and mothers moved to the New World in 1620 for both religious freedom and the opportunity to build new lives and prosper. Following their first harvest and hunting to stock up for the winter in 1621, they celebrated with a feast of corn and fowl to thank God for providing. Although this tradition continued for the next 200 years, Thanksgiving didn’t become official until 1863 when Abraham Lincoln declared the last Thursday in November as a national holiday. In 1939, Franklin D. Roosevelt moved the date to the fourth Thursday to ensure enough time for business between Thanksgiving and Christmas (fifth Thursday years apparently didn’t allow for enough shopping days!) Today, Thanksgiving continues to serve as a day for Americans to collectively give thanks for all that we have – even in a tumultuous year like 2017. In that spirit, the HBACA would like to wish all members, families and friends a very Happy Thanksgiving!
