Out of the Trenches Town Hall Series - With Ann O'Brien

This fall, the balance of power on the Phoenix City Council is up for grabs with two incumbent councilmembers not seeking reelection. Join the Home Builders Association of Central Arizona Political Action Committee (HBACA PAC) for a Virtual Town Hall with Phoenix City Council District 1 candidate Ann O’Brien. Ann is seeking to replace outgoing Councilwoman Thelda Williams to represent northwest Phoenix.

Ann is a mother and community leader in her district. She also currently serves on the Deer Valley Unified School District Governing Board and is the President-Elect of the Arizona School Boards Association. Ann has already earned the HBACA PAC’s endorsement for District 1 and we are excited to introduce her to our members.

District 1 represents an area of significant home building growth so it is vital that everyone get to know Ann. This is a great opportunity to hear her vision for the future of her district, her views on issues affecting home building, and her campaign. Plus Ann would like to hear from you on important issues to the industry. HBACA PAC members are invited to submit a question during registration; we will get to as many as we can with time permitting.

This event is open to all HBACA members.

Who is Ann O'Brien?

I’m Ann O’Brien: a dedicated mother, community leader, advocate for our schools and students, and now a candidate for Phoenix City Council, District 1. I was born and raised here in Phoenix. It’s where my husband and I started our family and raised two incredible kids, Amanda who is a math teacher, and Thomas who is a mechanical engineering student.

As we face new challenges, our city is at a crossroads. We can continue pointing fingers and spreading division, or we can choose to unify our communities and work together for a greater Phoenix. This is my promise: to work diligently for the people of District 1, fighting for a Phoenix that is accountable, transparent, fiscally responsible, and one that provides vital resources to all of its residents.

As a mother, my focus is and always has been on making our schools and our community as a whole better for every family. During a long career in real estate, I started to volunteer: coaching softball, substitute teaching, and serving as President of the Stetson Hills PTSA. But I realized that change isn’t accomplished in a vacuum. If I wanted to make a difference for our kids, I had to seek new opportunities. So, I ran for the Deer Valley USD school board - and won - twice! As well as still serving on the school board, I am the Arizona School Boards Association President Elect and sit on the WestEd Board of Directors.

I’ve worked with other public school advocates and our state legislature to support our students and teachers, keep dangerous criminals out of North Phoenix, advocate for transparency in government, and above all, to exemplify professionalism, respect, and civility.

I’m running for City Council because Phoenix needs more civility and less argument, more action and less division. Our City Council must focus on preserving and creating jobs, especially in this unprecedented and uncertain environment. We must invest further in public safety, libraries, parks and in our excellent local schools. Our roads need repairing, and our communities need more diverse housing options. I’ll work tirelessly for District 1 residents and the community issues that matter to us.
